Customized Learning approved at board meeting

By Aaron Eberle
The Edgemont School Board held a regular meeting on May 9. A moment of silence was held for Logan Van Eaton and his family.
Diane Stevens stated that she and Dave Cortney would continue to work on the budget for the next school year. Stevens and Clova Wasserburger will be attending a Food Service Procurement this summer in Rapid City.
Lane Ostenson thanked the middle school track coaches, Becky Peterson and Susan Ostenson. Ostenson also reported that the had completed the kindergarten screening and round up for this year. There is a possibility of six new students.
Ostenson stated that Oelrichs hosted the Oelrichs and Edgemont spelling bee. The students represented the school well on May 4.
Counselors that were sent over from various schools and the ministerial association were a big help to Edgemont students and staff on May 5.
Amy Ferley stated that the special education department had their review last fall. They got news recently that the Corrective Action Plan is closed and they have fixed everything the review team asked them to fix. Ferley also commented that the testing went well. Scores are starting to come back and they look good.
Ferley stated that the Freshman Impact is incredibly powerful for the students. Ferley and Becky Peterson are working on freshman orientation for them and their parents. They should have that done before school starts in the fall.
Cortney stated that on April 25, or after, it is required by law to give teachers their contracts for the upcoming year. Cortney has the majority of this done.
Cortney stated that the school conducted a tornado drill recently and that he is still conducting staff evaluations.
The board discussed the Mass Customized Learning (MCL) that was the topic of a special board meeting on May 2. Nobody had heard any discussion from parents or other community members. Board member, Justin Printz asked if they would be penalized for opting out of the MCL after the end of the three year grant period. They would not be. The board approved the MCL program.
Fresh Start has approached the school about using the Edgemont Mogul’s train logo. Fresh Start recently purchased PJ’s from Bill and Richelle Tanner. Fresh Start is hopeful to call their new purchase Mogul Mart and use the school logo.
Gary Darrow and Connie Gerard were both in agreement about having Fresh Start find their own train. Neither one wanted this to come back to “haunt” the school. Susan Humiston thought it was nice that they were showing interest in the community, but felt the board should show fairness to other businesses in town.

There has been some black mold in room H106, currently being used by Julie Martian. Cortney stated that he took some samples and nothing had been found hazardous after the tests. Plans have been made to redo the room this summer.

Cortney presented to the board an open enrollment application for a new kindergarten student. Ian Ferley, from Oelrichs, will be attending kindergarten in Edgemont this fall.
Cortney went over the surveillance camera system with the board. As of right now they have several cameras and Cortney would like to add more to the system or update to a newer system. Cortney had been working with KT Connections, Inc., out of Rapid City. So far new quotes or bids have been set, but Cortney was hopeful they could have a few ideas shortly.
Discussion has been held between the school board and the Edgemont Education Association. 18 teachers are in this union. There will be a higher salary base because of the increase in sales tax. There will also be an increase to help cover insurance increases. Other negotiations were made as well. The board approved what changes had been made.
The board also approved adding Chelsea Simons to the substitute list and to advertise for several coaching positions.
The next regular meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 13, at the Edgemont school library.
