Boys Basketball Preview

By Joe Martin
The 2015-16 EHS boys basketball team will be led by two-time all-conference selection and team captain Lathen Stevens (16.6 PPG, 4.3 RPG) when the Moguls begin the season this weekend with road games against District 14B foes New Underwood and Wall. Both teams have had the Moguls number in recent years and have ended their season in the first round of district tournament play in each of the last two seasons.
Plenty of players with starting experience return to join Stevens on the court including Dustin Curl (Sr, 1.8 PPG, 2.7 RPG), Malaky Refior (Jr, 2.9 PPG, 3.6 RPG), Zach Lane (Jr, 1.5 PPG, 0.5 RPG), Corey Andrie (So, 2.3 PPG, 0.6 RPG), and Rhett Beard (So, 1.8 PPG, 1.3 RPG). Andrie finished last year second on the team in three point field goals with 12 made. As a team the Moguls shot 21% from downtown last season, in addition to shooting 44% from the free throw line. Both areas need to be improved in order for the Mogul boys to be successful. Refior was named last years varsity Most Improved Player, while Lane took the JV award for Most Improved Player.
Kaleb Darrow (Fr, 0.4 PPG, 0.2 RPG) leads the list of players returning with varsity experience in addition to Trevor Stokes (Jr, 0.2 PPG, 0.2 RPG), Clay Englebert (So, 0.1 PPG, 0.2 RPG), and JD Berg (8th). Darrow appears set to have a breakout season, while Berg joins Refior as the only players to reach the coveted 6’0 mark on the game day program.
Rounding out the roster are players eager to make a positive impact this season in Chris Simons (Jr), Jared Refior (Fr), Dalton Reutter (Fr), and Jacob Mack (8th).
The Moguls participated in the Raider Summer League program in Rapid City this offseason in addition to pre-game open gyms for six weeks. The boys also put in plenty of open gym hours during November to improve their conditioning.
After the first weekend of games along I90, the Moguls venture into the Cornhusker State to take on Morill next Friday, before the Mogul Dome comes alive on Saturday night when Philip comes to town.
Due to Sioux County not having a boys team this season, the schedule has a slight change as the Moguls will now play in the Harrison Holiday Tournament on Monday and Tuesday, December 21 and 22. The Moguls join Morrill, Crawford, and Cody-Kilgore in a tournament they have participated in years past.
The Moguls finished with 1-20 record last season after going 5-16 and finishing second in the PAC tournament the year before. Dating back to the beginning of the 2008-09 season the Mogul boys program has tallied an overall record of 12 wins and 123 losses.
