Drivers suffer serious injuries in head-on accident

HOT SPRINGS – A two-vehicle accident near Hot Springs on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 3, sent both drivers to the hospital, including one by Lifeflight helicopter with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

The accident, which happened at 2:20 p.m., one mile east of Hot Springs on U.S. Hwy 18, also known as Fall River Road, occurred as the result of a 2016 Chevy Cruze crossing over the double yellow line, for unknown reasons, and then colliding nearly head-on with a 1996 Saturn SC, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

The Chevy Cruze was driven by an 80-year-old Hot Springs man, while the Saturn was driven by a 49-year-old Hot Springs woman. There were also two female passengers in the Saturn, one 46-years-old and another 13-years-old. Both passengers sustained only minor injuries. None of the occupants in either of the vehicles were wearing seat belts.

The female driver of the Saturn had to be extricated from her vehicle and was then taken to Rapid City Regional Hospital by Lifeflight helicopter, where she remains. The male driver of the Chevy Cruze was also transported to Rapid City Regional, but by ambulance.

Names have been withheld pending notification of all family members. The S.D. Highway Patrol is currently investigating the accident.
