Amanda Jo (Mayer) Allen, 30, of Edgemont, SD, passed May 13, 2018, at her home in Edgemont.
Amanda was born October 20, 1987, in Custer SD. She was the younger of two daughters belonging to Michael and Debra Mayer. She was born and raised in Custer. Her childhood was filled with happy memories spent with family, hiking, camping, fishing, and going on family vacations. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of everyday life.
Amanda attended school in Custer, graduating in 2005. She enjoyed playing basketball during high school. While attending school she met her high school sweetheart, Chris Allen, whom she later married. After High School she attended the Dental Assistant program offered by Western Dakota Tech. She received her certificate in dental Assisting and Radiology while working for Daniel Custis D.D.S. of Custer as a dental hygienist assistant. In December 2006, Amanda and Chris welcomed first born son, Anton Christopher Allen. Amanda and Chris were married April 19, 2008 in Hot Springs, SD. It wasn’t long until she hung up her smock to become a full time mother. In January 2010, Amanda and Chris welcomed their second child into the world, daughter, Anastie Jo Allen.
It was in the fall of 2011 she found her calling by becoming a substitute teacher at Edgemont Children’s Center where she soon became a preschool teacher. In the fall of 2012, Amanda joined the Edgemont YMCA as Site Coordinator. She continued until December 2015 when she became Director of the Edgemont YMCA. She was appointed to the Edgemont Library Board in May 2015. In May 2016 she was elected President of the Library Board which she held until present. This was her life. She was lovingly referred to as “Miss Amanda” by the community of Edgemont. In March 2018, her superiors at the YMCA nominated her for the “Award of Excellence”. She was more than deserving of this award, and honored to accept.
Amanda was very passionate about the community of Edgemont. She was extremely organized, goal driven, and prompt. This allowed her to be involved with the Edgemont Children’s Center, City Library Board, and the YMCA consisting of the Kid Stop Program, sports activities, and community swimming pool. She strived to be a positive role model for the children of Edgemont who had a special place in her heart.
Family was everything to Amanda. Her leisure time was spent with loved ones, whether it be doing something productive or having fun. She was always busy. She also enjoyed all things sci-fi, puzzles, and board games. You would rarely find her without a book. Amanda was a very compassionate, loving and caring individual. She poured her heart and soul into everything she did. She loved the outdoors. She preferred to walk while running errands. Amanda always had a smile on her face. She will be greatly missed by all!
Amanda is survived by her husband and children, Christopher, Anton, and Anastie Allen of Edgemont, SD; parents Michael and Debra Mayer of Custer, SD; sister, Nichole (Bart) Gregory and their children Nolan, Liam, and Emmit of Newcastle, WY; her brother-in-law, Jerrid (Jade) Allen and children Jaamis, Kiera, and Camdin of Prescott Valley, AZ; her grandparents, Deloris Brunken of Sioux Falls, SD and Florence Mayer of Custer, SD; her mother-in-law, Lori Allen of Prescott Valley, AZ along with numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Leonard Brunken and Franklin Mayer; and cousin, Dustin Goodro.
Memorial services for Amanda will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 18, 2018 at the Edgemont Baptist Church in Edgemont, SD with Reverend Joe Cormier officiating.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Chamberlain McColley's Funeral Home, Edgemont, SD.
