CROW CREEK – The Oelrichs boys’ basketball team won its third game in a row this past weekend to improve to 9-4 on the season after defeating Wakpala by a score of 89-37 as part of the first-ever Sacred Hoops Classic played in Crow Creek.
“We played Wakpala earlier in the year at their gym and beat them pretty badly and so our goal this week was to keep focused and treat it like any other game rather than overlooking them,” said Oelrichs head coach James Knutson.
Oelrichs however came out of the gates a bit slower than hoped, Coach Knutson said, as the score saw the Tigers up 16-10 heading into the second quarter.
“We had a rough first quarter, but after that we played really hard and got back to form giving up only 27 points over the next three quarters,” Knutson said, adding that his team shutout Wakpala in the fourth quarter after being up 70-37 after the third quarter.
Oelrichs had four players in double figures, led by sophomores Nick Tobacco with 24 and Toby Swallow with 18. Tobacco was also named the Classic’s player of the game. Senior Jason Long Soldier had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while fellow senior Chaz Swallow added 10 points and six rebounds.
This week, Coach Knutson said this team is preparing for a good Bison team, who is scheduled to come to Oelrichs on Tuesday, Jan. 30. On Thursday, Feb. 1, the Tigers were also scheduled to host Minatare, Neb.
