Winners announced in annual Climb Hot Springs event

HOT SPRINGS – This past weekend's annual Climb Hot Springs event featured competitors from as far away as New Jersey and Arizona, and as close as Hot Springs and a number of other South Dakota and Wyoming communities, as they competed in either the seven-mile or three-mile races around Hot Springs and featuring the town's historic staircases.

The seven mile race featured 657 steps over five flights, ranging from steep and straight to grand and curving. The stair cases and their names included: Castle Crunch (128 steps), Goddard Grind (123 steps), Museum Mash (109 steps), Battle Mountain Grand Challenge (141 steps) and College Cram (156 steps). In addition, competitors also ran up two big hills along their seven mile route that started and ended in downtown's Centennial Park.

The three mile route meanwhile included two flights of stairs totaling 264 steps.

A total of 34 participants finished the seven mile race, with the overall winner being Joshua Duncan, age 41, of Carpentersville, Ill. His time was 54 minutes and 47 seconds. This is the second year in a row he won.

The winner of the winner of the women's division was Sara Lout, age 40, of Hot Springs. Her time was 1 hour, 8 minutes and 23 seconds.

Four people finished the three-mile course, with the overall men's winner being J.J. Doherty, age 44, of Pine Ridge (44:04). The women's winner was Heidi Morgan, age 45, of Hot Springs (44:37).

The hometowns of some of the other Climb Hot Springs participants included Upper Montclair, N.J., Rio Rico and Chandler, Ariz., Wheatland and Guernsey, Wyo., as well as several from Sioux Falls and other towns in South Dakota.
