Karen Martha McCleery

October 23, 1938 - March 2, 2019 

Karen Martha McCleery, 80, of Hot Springs, passed away March 2, 2019, at Regional Health Home Plus Hospice House in Rapid City.

Karen was born October 23, 1938, to John and Marion (Pomeroy) Britton in Rapid City. She was raised in Igloo, and graduated from Provo High school in 1957. On July 3, 1961, she married Forrest McCleery. Together they had three children, two daughters and one son. During their 43 years of marriage they moved many times, living in South Dakota, Nebraska, Missouri, California and Wyoming. Karen and Forrest owned and operated a convenience store, “Three Forks”, seven miles from Mt Rushmore. She loved to visit with the local customers and tourists from all over the world.

Karen was a member of the Southern Hills Evangelical Free Church. She loved to volunteer, serving the Meals on Wheels program and the Senior Center. She was elected as Vice President of the Hot Springs Senior Center for some time. She received the South Dakota Volunteer of the year award.

Karen loved to go on adventures with her best friend Phyllis Muhm. Together they explored nearly every cemetery within a 100-mile radius of Hot Springs. She especially enjoyed their frequent ice cream “runs”. She loved to play bingo. She was an avid gardener and had a huge garden for many years.

Karen is survived by son, Patrick (Joy) McCleery of Pine Bluffs, Wyo.; daughter, Billie Jo (Jim) Tomlinson of Jeffersonville, Ind.; brother, John (Richard) Britton of Hot Springs; grandchildren, Chris; Kelly; J.R.; Alicia; Ryan; Tyler; Christine; Michael; Logan; Isabel; great grandchildren, Cody; Emily; Bella; Jayden; Anna; Jessy; Forrest, Mia; sisters in law; Dorothy McCleery of Manteca, Cali.; and Doris (Richard) Heesch of Kingman, Ariz.

Preceding Karen in death were husband, Forrest McCleery; daughter, Christine; parents; brothers, Robert; Jesse; Edward; and Charles; sisters, Mary and Joanne.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, March 9, 2019, at Southern Hills Evangelical Free Church in Hot Springs, with Ted Moeller officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Regional Health Home Plus Hospice House, 244 Elk St., Rapid City, SD 57701.

Arrangements were placed in the care of Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home in Hot Springs.
