Thursday, January 7, Custer hosted a quadrangular match along with parent’s night for Custer wrestling and the start of a long weekend for the wrestlers. Chance Grill and Brennen Hanes the 106 pound and 120 pound Custer wrestlers from Edgemont had key wins in Custer’s successful weekend of wrestling.
The first dual saw Bennett County take on Custer. In the first match of the evening, Grill entered the second period with a 7-0 lead when he was able to pin the Bennett Co wrestler gaining extra bonus points for the team.
The most exciting match of the evening was when eighth grader Hanes took on his Bennett County opponent. Up until the third period, Hanes was always two to three points behind.
Late in the third period, he was able to route an exciting comeback and score a reversal giving him a one-point lead. He topped off the match by putting the Bennett County wrestler on his back for back points as time ran out, bringing the crowd to their feet.
Hanes’ win proved vital as Custer edged Bennett County in the dual by two team points.
Custer’s next dual of the evening was with Sundance, WY. Grill bumped up to the 113 pound weight division to take on a salty Sundance opponent.
Grill managed his match well and ended up winning 6-4. Hanes received a forfeit. Custer handily beat a small Sundance team.
The final dual of the evening for Custer was with Newell. Grill wrestled at 106 pounds. Grill made quick work of the Newell opponent, leading 12-2 in the second period when he was able to win with a pin. Again, Hanes received a forfeit win. Custer defeated Newell in the team dual.
Early Friday morning (January 8), the wrestlers left Custer and headed to Presho, SD for the Mid Dakota Monster tournament, known for being one of the tougher wrestling tournaments in the state.
Grill handily won all three of his matches that day with major decisions, 12-1, 10-2, and 11-1.
Grill’s first match Saturday morning was against the number two wrestler in State, unfortunately he lost and headed to the wrestle backs. Grill came back strong in his next match with a pin sending him into wrestle for third place.
In the third place match, Grill wrestled against the number seven wrestler in State and was able to win 4-1 for a third place medal.
On Friday, Hanes started out his day with byes for the first two rounds. In the afternoon with no warm up matches, Hanes faced the number one wrestler in State and tournament champion and lost.
On Saturday morning, Hanes got the Custer fans pumped up with an exciting two-point win in his first match. Hanes lost his second match sending him into wrestle for seventh place. Hanes wasn’t done with the Custer fans and the crowd in his seventh place match!
In the third period with eight seconds to go in the match Hanes was behind 3-7, when he scored a reversal and put his opponent on his back scoring five total points at the buzzer for an 8-7 win for the seventh place medal, bringing the Custer fans and the surrounding crowd to their feet!
Other Custer wrestlers that placed at the Mid Dakota Monster tournament were as follows: Micaiah Grace at 132 pounds - seventh place, Blake Kainz at 152 pounds - fifth place, Forrest Lewis at 160 pounds- sixth place, Anthony Jones at 182 pounds- sixth place and Ben Marchand at 195 pounds- fifth place. As a team, Custer finished in eighth place.
